Today in Special Ops Archives, ARAH series editor Alex Antone gives us the inside scoop about G.I. Joe Special #1 (our next stretch goal) and how it involves Image co-founder Todd McFarlane!
What’s the first thing you think of when you think of G.I. Joe Special #1?
Alex: In 1990, Marvel printed the interiors of this issue with a new cover that homages McFarlane's famous Spider-Man run. They called it G.I. Joe Special #1. It’s one of the rarest and most coveted G.I. Joe comics in existence!
What do you think is the most unique aspect of this issue?
Alex: As legend goes, in 1987, Todd McFarlane, now known as the creator of SPAWN, was originally hired to draw ARAH #61 (after drawing issue 60), but for reasons known only to a select few, his work was shelved and the issue was redrawn by Marshall Rogers and Danny Bulandi.
Tell our friends here how we’re celebrating this landmark issue!
Alex: Fun fact: This issue has been recently restored by Skybound from the ground up! Hope you enjoy!
Another Incredible G.I. Joe Project: Creating G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero!
Finally, we know you can't get enough of G.I. Joe, so we wanted to share the love and make you aware of another AWESOME G.I. Joe project that has been under lock and key at “The Pit” for years!
Dan Klingensmith recently finished his significant undertaking of cataloging the creation of the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero brand in a 15-volume book set! Outside of discussing the history of G.I. Joe, Dan Klingensmith takes you on a journey on how G.I. Joe action figures, vehicles, and playsets came to be in the 1980s and 1990s.
With 1000+ pages printed in the USA, the Creating G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero book series showcases internal designs and prototypes that were never meant to be seen by the public, the inspiration and influences behind the different figures and vehicles from the designer’s perspective, alternate names that Larry Hama created when writing a character’s file card, information pulled directly from internal memos regarding decisions or changes made, and insider stories from those who worked on the G.I. Joe brand. This series would not have been a success if it were not for the support Dan received from the many members who worked on the Joe brand at Hasbro!
To see additional sample pages and to purchase the books, please click here! There is a great deal going on right now for the full set of 15 books that include 3 slipcases to hold this wealth of knowledge!
If you are in the Dallas area this weekend, please stop by and see Dan and several members of the Hasbro team that helped bring G.I. Joe to life in the 80s and 90s! Also attending this show is Larry Hama! Stop by to talk to him about his involvement with our epic project! Click here for more details!
We have 5 days left so make sure to keep spreading the word about this campaign, time is almost up! Make sure you tell your friend and family to get in on the action before it's too late! Final weekend!
YO JOE!

ANNOUNCEMENT: LARRY HAMA is doing an AMA!
Finally, we are so excited to announce Larry Hama will be doing an AMA this Thursday, June 20th at 11am PT / 2pm ET!
We'll hit you with the link as soon as it's live! Get your questions ready for the man, the myth, and the legend!
In today’s Artists on the Front Line, we chat with Ron Wagner, one of the flagship cover and interior illustrators that worked on A Real American Hero’s initial run.
What do you think is the most underrated issue or cover you worked on?
Ron: My favorite issue was the one that the late Russ Heath inked over my pencils [issue #64]. He was a childhood hero of mine. I loved his Sgt. Rock art! It was a great thrill for me.
Who is the G.I. Joe or Cobra character that you feel you didn’t get to draw enough of? Why do you find that character so interesting?
Ron: I always liked Destro and the Baroness. I always find the bad guys more interesting.
You obviously worked with the legendary Larry Hama. Are there any anecdotes or stories you have from working with him?
Ron: Larry, was the first Editor at Marvel to give me work. When I first called him to ask for an appointment to show him my portfolio, fresh from graduating the Kubert School, he said, "I want to see 22 pages of continuity or I don't want to see you." I answered, "I have them!" and I went in to see him. He gave great advice about what I was doing wrong, and said if I did 5 pages of good super hero stuff he would show it to every Editor there.
